New “NO SWIMMING” Signs Placed at Sandy Beach

NEW “NO SWIMMING” SIGNS PLACED AT SANDY BEACH

As Rio Vista closed 2011, we can see positive change coming to the area of Rio Vista. Nothing can replace the life of Silver Jubilation Tuakalua who lost his life in late July while trying to rescue several members of his church youth group. On that tragic day, as I stood by another youth leader we shared our concerns about the need for additional “no swimming” signs near the dock and other areas. I shared our concerns and a need for action with Solano County Supervisor Mike Reagan. I am glad to share with you that the next time you visit Sandy Beach Park, you will see that the County has installed several new and more informative “no swimming” signs throughout the park.

A flower memorial is located next to the “no swimming sign near the dock. The signs inform park users that there is no swimming due to the strong currents and steep drop offs in the river, and no lifeguard on duty. Hopefully, providing clear information to park visitors about the dangers of swimming in the river will help avoid another drowning tragedy.

I want to thank Dan Sykes, Solano County Parks Services Manager and Solano County Supervisor Mike Rea¬gan for taking action.
