SOLANO COUNTY, CA – Join Larry Broderick and his Solano Land Trust Raptor Team for the last raptor tour of the fall migration season at Lynch Canyon. Discover, observe and learn about ea¬gles, hawks and other birds of prey on Sunday, October 7 from 10am to 2pm. Take advantage of this special opportunity to see resident, migrating and over-winter¬ing raptors. Previous sight¬ings include golden eagles, Cooper’s hawks, ferruginous hawks, American kestrels, white-tailed kites, red-tailed hawks, Northern harriers, and turkey vultures.

Broderick brings over 25 years of experience study¬ing, researching, rescuing and rehabilitating birds of prey. He’s a gifted and entertaining teacher who is anxious to share his knowl¬edge of and passion for rap¬tors with others.
Historically, these tours have been wildly popular and, although tour size is not lim¬ited, please RSVP to Mary Beth at 707-685-5908 or mbcrittendon@comcast.net. Meet at the Lynch Canyon parking lot by 10am sharp. Bring $5 cash for parking; a backpack with plenty of water and snacks; boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rough, steep, and slippery terrain; long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty; and protection from sun, wind and fog. Binoculars, a camera, bug repellent, hiking sticks, and a picnic lunch for after the hike are also recommended. A donation is suggested to help sustain these tours.

All ages are welcome, but participants must be prepared for a moderate pace covering about 4 miles, possibly off-trail in places, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle, and passing free range cattle along the way.
Lynch Canyon is owned by the Solano Land Trust and is a part of the Solano County Parks system. Because it is a working cattle ranch, pets are not allowed. October 6-7 is the last weekend the park will be open to the public until mid-March 2013, but the Land Trust will con¬duct docent-led raptor tours beginning in January. Top 10 Retirement Planning Excuses

Ten common “reasons” why someone does not plan for
retirement.

#10: “I’m too busy” Stop procrastinating. How
does the saying go? The best time to plant a tree is 30
years ago. The second best time is … TODAY.
#9: “It’s too soon” It’s NEVER too soon. The
sooner you start planning, the better chance you stand of
having the kind of retirement you want.
#8:“It’s too late” Think again. Even if you’ve
already retired, it’s important to consider how you’re receiving
income and how long it will last.
#7:“I don’t need to” This one baffles me. If you’re
simply giving monthly to a savings account and hoping
for the best, you may be in for an unpleasant surprise
someday.
#6: “I don’t have enough money to get started”
Starting small is better than not starting at all, and if you
plan well, you’ll eventually have more to work with.
#5: “My finances are a mess” Consider speaking with a
Financial Professional who can look at your complete
financial picture and help you to develop a plan to make
your “mess” work for you.
#4: “The Government will take care of me”
If you’re planning to retire on Social Security alone, I
would advise you to create a back-up plan at the very least.
#3: “Between my savings and my 401(k), I’ll be fine”

A dedicated group called 4-H attacked a planter box with rakes and shovels last Saturday. They called this event The Planter Box Clean-up, at the corner of Front and Main infront of Rio Vist Sanitation. Julie Mc Cormack at Oilwell Materials/Ace Hardware donated plants and topsoil in exchange for the work RV 4H did for the Oilwell Material’s 60th Anniversary in June. With the help of equipment from Warren Gomes Excavating and hard¬working parents, the club was able to make the boxes look MUCH better.

A big thank you to club helpers Mike Griffin, Chris¬tina Esperson, Jenny Emigh, Dana Lira, Kevin Kistner, Hooter Apple, Stephen Oglesby, Glen Myer, Noelle and Warren Gomes, Jr. and club advisor Toni Tucker for all your help. “This was re¬ally fun,” said Megan Ross. “It looks really good.”

There were many gross things in the planter boxes includ¬ing cigarette butts and dog “waste”. It would be nice if people could stop throwing cigarette butts in the planter boxes and clean up after their pets. It would be helpful.
Our next project is our float for the Bass Derby Parade.
