Jerold’s Journey Paying it Forward Foundation

Jerold helping others

Every day all of us have a chance to make today even better than
yesterday. However, most of us will never have an opportunity to
actually have  “a second chance in life,” like Jerold Maghoney.

He was born and raised in Rio Vista.  A little over 3 ½ years ago at
the age of 28, alcoholism almost took his life.  He was placed in a
medically induced coma for almost two weeks with severe acute
pancreatitis.  Because of his youth and his strength, he was able to
beat the odds. He made a promise to God during this difficult chapter
of his life, “if I make it through all of this, I want to give back.”
Jerold did make it through and has kept to his promise.

He enrolled in San Joaquin Valley College and became a medical
assistant.  After graduation, he found it difficult to find a
full-time job. Knowing that he wanted to keep his promise to God,
Jerold took a job part-time at a homeless shelter in Manteca. Where he
uses some of his medical training.

After his mom passed away on April 20, 2019, he struggled to find his
purpose in life. Until he was driving down the street late one night
and saw a homeless man without shoes or a blanket. His Mom’s voice
popped into his head saying, “awe I wish someone would help him.”  He
stopped the car and got that man all the warm clothes and blankets he
could carry.
The next day he started his foundation. (Jerold’s Journey Paying it
Forward Foundation ).  A few weeks into the start, he was
shopping at Walmart, and  he noticed  a homeless man that had nothing.
He took him into the store and bought him a tent and sleeping bag. It
was just the kick start he needed, that on his days off, he wanted to
help those in need.

His family has lived in Rio Vista for over 100 years. He is 3rd
generation to go to Rio Vista High School. Jerold thought no better
place to start asking for donations to help the homeless than his
hometown.  He started posting on Facebook  and the generosity of the
city has been amazing.

Jerold takes all kinds of donations, clothing, toiletries, food, dog
food and much more.  His uncle, Jeff Maghoney donated a 100 pair of
shoes and another person donated new white dress shirts for men.
He loads up his van and drives mostly from Lodi to Lathrop, looking
for homeless people or camps that are in need of his donations.  There
was one day that he helped 130 people. Each week more and more
individuals and businesses have donated to his cause.
The other huge support behind him is his  fiancé, Elle Lewis. She has
been  by his side through his journey the last 3 years.
On August 18th he’ll be celebrating four years clean and sober.

Jerold is hoping to make this a full time job.  With big plans for the
future.  He currently comes to Rio Vista a few times a week.  If you
are interested in making a donation you can contact him a few
different ways.
