WHAT: As part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s Clean California initiative, Caltrans will fund local beautification projects in communities throughout the state with $296 million in competitive Clean California grants. Applications for grants up to $5 million begin today, and Caltrans will announce the grant recipients on March 1, 2022.

ABOUT CLEAN CALIFORNIA LOCAL GRANTS PROGRAM: California cities, counties, transit agencies, tribal governments and other governmental entities can submit proposals to beautify their communities and address trash and debris. These projects will be aimed at reducing waste and debris and beautifying public spaces. For example, Caltrans will consider projects that remove litter on city streets, create a marker on a thoroughfare entering a town or neighborhood, beautify an area through greening or landscaping, or facilitate cultural connections and civic pride within a community. Part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s California Comeback Plan, Clean California is a sweeping $1.1 billion, multiyear clean-up effort to remove trash, create thousands of jobs and engage communities to transform roadsides into places of public pride. Since July, Caltrans has collected 3,800 tons of trash and made more than 600 conditional job offers as part of the program.
