“A customer once told me that through bras, I was helping women ease not only the discomfort they carried on their bodies but also some of the wounds they carried in their hearts.
I have never forgotten those words.”
These are the words of Maggie, the founder of Sukurai, a comfort-focused wireless bra boutique. She earned her master’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation from the University of San Francisco. Even while she was in school, she knew that she wanted to build a business of her own—something meaningful that could solve a real problem and improve everyday life.
After graduation, Maggie began helping with her family’s lingerie business. At first, they explored online sales, but they quickly discovered that bras are not ordinary products. A photograph, description, and size chart can only tell a customer so much.
Two women may wear the same labeled size but need completely different bras because of their shape, sensitivity, mobility, lifestyle, and comfort preferences. Even the same woman may need something different as her body changes over time.
That realization led Maggie toward meeting customers face to face.
She started by attending pop-up events and flea markets. She packed displays, supplies, and boxes of bras into the car and spent long days listening to women describe their experiences.
Many had lived with discomfort for years. Their straps dug into their shoulders. Their bands rolled, felt too tight, or left red marks. Some felt pressure around the underarms, sides, or back. Others continued buying the same size simply because it was the only size they knew.
What surprised Maggie most was how many women believed discomfort was normal.
Some assumed bras were simply supposed to hurt. Others blamed their own bodies when a bra did not fit correctly. Many did not realize that the problem might be the wrong size, cup shape, construction, or style.
This became one of the beliefs at the heart of Sukurai: a woman should not have to change herself to fit a bra. The bra should be selected to support the woman she is today.
Bodies naturally change throughout life. Weight, posture, breast shape, skin sensitivity, and mobility may change with age, motherhood, surgery, illness, or other life experiences. A bra that worked years ago may no longer feel right today, and that does not mean anything is wrong with the woman.
Sukurai focuses on wireless bras in band sizes 32 to 48 and cup sizes A to DDD in selected styles. Many of the bras the boutique carries feature wider shoulder straps, broader side panels, supportive underbands, and fuller coverage. These details can help distribute pressure more evenly and provide smoother support around the underarms, sides, and back.
Sukurai’s first physical retail location at Great Mall in Milpitas allowed Maggie and her team to meet customers from many different backgrounds. It confirmed that women were looking for comfortable wireless options and personal guidance.
However, because the location was a kiosk without a traditional fitting room, Maggie continued imagining a quieter and more private space where women could take their time and receive more individualized help.
Opening a second location was one of their goals for the year, although they expected it might happen closer to the end of the year.
Then, in February, they came across a Facebook Marketplace listing for a small commercial space in downtown Rio Vista.
The size was right. The rent was manageable. The layout was suitable for the intimate fitting studio they had imagined. There was only one issue: none of them had heard of Rio Vista.
When they first drove into town, it felt as though they had arrived somewhere completely different. The pace was calmer. People walking their dogs or passing along the street would smile, say hello, and sometimes stop for a brief conversation.
There was an immediate sense of comfort and ease.
Rio Vista was far from their Milpitas location and far from where they lived. From a practical standpoint, it was not the most convenient choice. But Maggie believes business is not shaped by convenience alone. Timing, location, people, and instinct also matter.
A suitable 200-square-foot commercial space at an affordable rent is extremely difficult to find in the Bay Area. The opportunity felt rare, and the community gave them a feeling they could not ignore.
They decided to trust their instincts and take the chance.
From the moment they signed the lease, nearly every part of the boutique was built and arranged by Maggie and her husband. They put together the racks, installed the lighting, created the fitting room, planned the design, and adjusted the layout repeatedly
They had limited renovation experience and a limited budget, so much of the process involved learning as they went. Some displays were moved several times, and some ideas looked better in their imagination than they did in the actual space.
Slowly, however, the empty storefront became the boutique they had hoped to create.
Since opening in Rio Vista, Maggie has come to understand that this work carries more meaning than she once realized.
She has met women who have undergone mastectomies or other surgeries. She has also met customers living with back discomfort, limited shoulder movement, chronic health conditions, or difficulty raising their arms.
For them, bra shopping is not simply frustrating. The wrong bra can add pressure to discomfort they already experience every day.
A bra cannot solve a medical problem, but the right design may remove one unnecessary source of discomfort. Sometimes that means wider straps, a softer band, better side coverage, or a front closure that is easier to manage.
Many customers have found Sukurai through word of mouth. Even when Maggie meets them for the first time, they often share deeply personal stories about their health, families, and the experiences that have changed their bodies.
That trust is something Maggie never takes for granted.
At Sukurai, the service begins with listening. Maggie wants to understand what a customer currently wears, where she feels discomfort, and what she hopes will feel different.
There is no single bra that works for every woman, and the size on a label is only a starting point.
Maggie came to Rio Vista hoping to introduce more women to comfortable wireless bras. Instead, the women of Rio Vista have taught her how much meaning can exist behind one small piece of clothing.
She hopes that every customer who visits Sukurai leaves feeling heard, respected, and more comfortable than when she arrived.
Sometimes a bra is simply a piece of clothing.
But sometimes, finding one that finally feels right can bring relief, confidence, and the comforting reminder that a woman’s body was never the problem.
