Sometimes the best things in life begin simply for the fun of it. For Scott Rutherford of Rio Vista, that fun began with baking cookies—and a longtime quest to find the perfect chocolate chip cookie.
After retiring, Scott found himself looking for an outlet for his energy, so he decided to start a cookie business. Baking seemed like a natural fit, especially for someone who had always been on the pursuit of the perfect chocolate chip cookie.
What began as a fun way to satisfy his own sweet tooth soon evolved into a desire to explore a business opportunity in baking and share a little sweetness with others.
That was the beginning of The Cookie Jar, a cottage food operation through Solano County.
Scott approached his new venture with both enthusiasm and a business plan. He began experimenting with recipes, testing different flavors and adding his own interpretations to the cookies. The result was a collection of approximately 18 varieties, all made from scratch using quality ingredients.
Chocolate chip cookies may have inspired the journey, but there’s much more to discover at The Cookie Jar. The selection includes refreshing lemon cookies, cinnamon-sugar snickerdoodles, warmly spiced ginger cookies, classic oatmeal raisin, and many other delicious varieties. With so many choices, there’s something to tempt nearly every cookie lover.
What makes The Cookie Jar especially distinctive is its flexibility. Looking for a particular cookie that isn’t on the menu? Scott welcomes custom orders and enjoys the opportunity to create something to suit individual tastes. He also offers gluten-free and vegan options for customers with different dietary preferences, making it easier for more people to enjoy a homemade treat.
Scott believes that sweetness is meant to be shared.
When a baking session leaves him with extra cookies, they don’t go to waste. As a supporter of the Rio Vista Senior Center and Food Pantry, he finds another way to share his homemade treats by donating to these wonderful people.
For Scott, baking is about more than mixing ingredients and sliding a tray into the oven. It’s about sharing the enjoyment of something delicious with others in the community.
There’s a special kind of satisfaction in knowing that a freshly baked cookie can brighten someone’s day, bring a smile to a face, or add a little sweetness to an ordinary afternoon.
The Cookie Jar also offers a reminder that retirement doesn’t have to mean slowing down. It can be an opportunity to explore new interests, take a chance on an idea, and discover unexpected rewards.
And knowing Scott, The Cookie Jar may not be his last entrepreneurial adventure. He just might already be thinking about other business opportunities that could bring something worthwhile to the Rio Vista community.
As for his search for the perfect chocolate chip cookie? That story is still being written, one batch at a time.
For Rio Vista residents with a sweet tooth, The Cookie Jar offers a delicious way to celebrate homemade goodness, discover new favorites, and support a local entrepreneur who turned a love of baking into a sweet new chapter.
After all, it’s not just about cookies.
It’s a Cookie Thing!
