Calling All Chili and Rib Cooks!
The 9th Annual Hog August Bites wants to hear from YOU!
Chili cooks who have not ever competed, this is YOUR opportunity to show your stuff. Do you have an old family recipe that everyone loves? When you bring your chili to a potluck is the bowl always clean when you go home? Do your friends and neighbors beg you for your recipe? If any of the above apply, it is time to sign up and let the official judges let you know how scrumptious your chili is!
It sounds daunting, get up early, trek downtown with your screened in tent, pots and all the makings for your chili. Yet, this is a momentous event to assess your skills. Yes, there will be juried judging and yes, the people will judge your chili also. However, you KNOW your chili is good because you have been told that for years.
It is a wonderful experience chatting with people from the crowd while you chop, season, and cook your chili. The beautiful aroma that wafts through the streets is amazing as the chili simmers and bubbles a bit. Returning contestants are sure to offer a new contestant hints and tips. It is a friendly and fun atmosphere.
Let’s not forget the other highlight of the show! Rib contestants! They come towing big bar-b-que grills, others use pellet stoves, smokers, and other mysterious looking cookers! Rib cooks can choose to participate in juried only or juried and People’s Choice. Kansas City BBQ Society rules apply, but this is not a KCBS event. Tracie Allen leads the juried rib judges, a KCBS certified judge, other judges range from local dignitaries to butchers!
It is easy to sign up too! Just go to the Hog August Bites website and you can sign-up and pay online. You can find everything you need to sign up for the contest at hogaugustbites.com, choose the tab for your event and the chili and rib rules are on the sign-up page.
Everyone is looking forward to sampling all the ribs and chili that will be cooked on August 26, 2023, at the 9th Annual Event in downtown Rio Vista. See you there!!!
