Rio Vista High School’s Cross Country Program Hopes for Another Successful Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day 2022

Turkey Trot 2021

Rio Vista’s Own Turkey Trot will return to action this year at 8 AM Thanksgiving morning. This will be the race’s 8th edition. Last year’s race was a big success and the Rio Vista High School Cross Country team is excited to repeat the results with this year’s race. Due to the support of the community and hard work put in by the Turkey Trot committee, the team will be able to purchase important training tools and team warm-ups for this year’s season. With the support of the RioVision board and members, the organizing committee consisting of Edwin Okamura, Tami Mitchell, Noelle Gomes and Erin Kidwell, will be returning to help organize and promote the event.

Rio Vista’s Own Turkey Trot has become a favorite Thanksgiving morning tradition for many families in the delta area. And, of course, running (or walking) is a healthy and fun way to celebrate the holiday and build community spirit. The main race distance is 5K and is a predominantly paved street course that is generally flat with only a few gentle up and downhill sections. While the plan is to keep the course as close to the same as possible, there may be some subtle differences return runners will notice if changes are approved. In addition to the regular 5K race for seasoned runners, blossoming runners can participate in the ¼ -mile dash for ages 4-7 or the 1-mile race open to runners up to age 12. Racers can participate in the 5K race at any level they wish; running, jogging or walking. Prizes for 1st-3rd places will be awarded in each age category in addition to the overall Top Male and Top Female awards.

Signing up for this year’s run is easier than ever! The sign-up site is currently activated and ready to go! Runners and walkers can sign up and pay online at https://runsignup.com and search Rio Vista Turkey Trot. Runners can choose a t-shirt if they sign up before the deadline on November 11. The cost of the Turkey Trot is inflation-proof! The 5K race is still $30, the 1-mile race $5 and the ¼-mile dash is free. If the deadline is missed, same-day registration will be offered, with a small fee increase. The cost will be $35 at the door on race day and a t-shirt is not guaranteed.

All proceeds of the Turkey Trot will go directly to the RVHS cross country team, as well as other high school athletic teams who help with the event. If your business or organization would like to help sponsor the event, please contact Tami Mitchell at tami.mitchell.26@gmail.com or 925-819-4822. There are different levels of sponsorship for those who would like to donate. Whether you help a little or a lot, it is appreciated very much and put to good use for young runners. Previous races have allowed the programs to afford everything from t-shirts and snacks to invitational entry fees and high-tech running watches.

We hope to see you all Thanksgiving morning!
