After six months of dedicated training, cadets from the California Highway Patrol (CHP)
Academy have one more physical task to complete. Before the sun rises on Wednesday
February 2, more than 100 women and men will lace up their running shoes and take part
in a 5-mile run from the CHP Academy in West Sacramento to the California Peace Officers’
Memorial in Sacramento near the State Capitol. This time-honored tradition pays tribute to the
members of California’s law enforcement community who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The names of more than 1,600 brave public servants are forever etched on the memorial. These
women and men sacrificed their lives while fulfilling the oath they swore
to uphold. The monument serves as a reminder to the dangers of the job upon which the
soon-to-be-officers are about to embark.
While at the monument, cadets and officers will observe a moment of silence to honor
California’s fallen heroes.

WHERE: CHP Academy, 3500 Reed Avenue, West Sacramento
VISUALS: Cadets will run in formation and sing cadence on Reed Avenue, across the
Tower Bridge, along Capitol Mall, and end at the Peace Officers’
Memorial on 10th Street and Capitol Mall.
