The 2020 swim season ended early, in fact, they only got one swim meet in for the season. This happened due to all the shut downs amid the COVID precautions. This year, just in time, California opened up enough for the high school kids to begin practicing for their swim season – never knowing if they’d even be able to have any competition.
On March 31st, 2021 the Vacaville Christian Falcons came to the Rio Vista Pool in the Rams first competition of the season. It definitely looks different than in years past. Parents, unless they are working, must watch from outside the gate. Kids are social distancing and wearing masks unless they are swimming. But you can still feel the excitement of the competition! They kids are swimming some of their fastest times and cheering each other on excitedly.
In this week’s match up, the Rams, led by coaches Toni Tucker & Dan Mahoney, took first place in 20 out of 22 events. The boys team won their matchup against Vacaville Christian easily, with a score of 62 – 10. Our boys team is small in numbers, but mighty in strength – they are fast and hard to beat! However, with only 4 swimmers, our boys team is the largest in our league. Senior captain Fisher Lyon says, “So far our boys team is doing well. We are continuously getting better through practice and there should be more meet victories in the future.”
The girls also won their matchup against the Falcons with a score of 79 – 73. This one was a nail-biter, coming down to the very end. The Falcons came in with 9 girls facing off against the Rams’ 7 girls. In the end, the Lady Rams were able to pull out the victory. Captain Lacee Myer says, “We have a strong team. We were able to win our first meet and they had more girls than us.”
Way to go Rams! Hopefully this is the first of many wins this season!
