Solano County Library is excited to announce the return of its annual
Summer Reading Challenge, a free all-ages program that encourages
reading, learning, and family fun throughout the summer.
Beginning June 1, community members of all ages — babies, children, teens,
and adults — can sign up online or at any Solano County Library location for
this year’s “Camp-Y-Bara” themed reading adventure, inspired by everyone’s
favorite laid-back animal: the capybara.
The Summer Reading Challenge runs from June 1 through July 31, 2026.
Participants track reading minutes or complete fun activities on their
gameboard throughout the summer, then visit their local library branch to
pick up prizes as they reach badge milestones along the way.
Summer reading helps children maintain literacy skills while school is out,
encourages lifelong learning, and promotes reading as a fun and rewarding
activity for all ages. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers model the
importance of reading to children by also participating in the Summer
Reading Challenge.
“We see a lot of families at the library during the summer, and the Summer
Reading Challenge gives people a fun reason to keep reading and stay
connected,” said Mike Eitner, Director of Library Services. “Whether it’s
picking up books, coming to an event, or just spending time at the library,
we’re excited to welcome the community this summer. And remember the
Summer Reading Challenge is open to people ages 0-100+.”
Participants can earn prizes for every 200 minutes of reading. Readers who
reach the halfway point of the challenge will receive tickets to a Sacramento
River Cats game. Those who complete the challenge will receive a Camp-Y-
Bara plushie and a free book for children and teens while supplies last.
The Library extends special thanks to the Sacramento River Cats for donating
tickets, and to the Friends Groups of Solano County Library and the Solano
County Library Foundation for supporting the book and plushie incentives.
In addition to the reading challenge, all Solano County Library locations will
offer free family-friendly summer events, including live animal presentations,
arts and crafts programs, music performances, educational activities, and
more. The Library’s free “Lunch at the Library” program for youth ages 18 and
younger will also return at select branches this summer.
All registered participants will automatically be entered into weekly raffle
drawings featuring prizes donated by local Solano County businesses,
including restaurant meals, ferry passes, entertainment tickets, grocery gift
cards, and more.
