STA Awarded $10.4 Million for SolanoExpress Electrification and Improvements to Regional Transit Facilities

SUISUN CITY, CA – On April 21, 2020 The California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) announced a $10.4 million award of Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP) funds to the Solano Transportation Authority (STA) for Solano Regional Transit Improvements – Phase 2, and this award will be used to for the following projects:

SolanoExpress capital, access, and operational improvements (Fairfield Transportation Center, and Vacaville Transit Center), Shared inductive charging located at five regionally significant transit centers (Vallejo Transit Center, Walnut Creek BART, Sacramento Valley Amtrak Station, Suisun Amtrak Station, Fairfield Transportation Center), Multi-modal improvements at Fairfield-Vacaville Hannigan Train Station (expanded surface parking, bike/pedestrian access improvements, and transitoriented housing development) Network integration planning (real-time transit coordination, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Lite transition and electrification plan).

“With the SolanoExpress regional bus service, two Capitol Corridor train stations, a ferry terminal, and connections to BART and Sacramento Regional Transit, Solano County can offer multiple safe, convenient, and reliable transit options to commuters – especially for the front-line workers providing essential services,” said STA Board Chair and Mayor of Vacaville Ron Rowlett. “And these funds will help considerably as SolanoExpress continues toward the goal of 100% electrification of all SolanoExpress buses.”

This grant is a partnership between CalSTA, STA, Solano County Transit (Sol- Trans), Capitol Corridor, City of Fairfield, City of Vacaville, City of Suisun City, City of Vallejo, and partners in Contra Costa and Sacramento Counties. Projects are scheduled to begin in 2021 and 2022.

TIRCP funding is provided through Senate Bill 1 (SB 1) and from the proceeds of the Cap and Trade program. The program provides major benefits towards meeting the State’s climate and air quality goals, with a total reduction of more than 32 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
